My Story Apply to Work Together

Trail & Ultra Running · Strength & Conditioning Coach

Build something that lasts.

If you are patient enough to trust the process, consistent enough to keep showing up, and open enough to be coached well, there is more available to you than you currently think.

I started in exactly the same place. Everything that followed was built one step at a time.

I started in the same place a lot of runners do. No real idea what I was doing, inconsistent, and genuinely unsure whether any of this was for me.

In 2016 I finished my first half marathon convinced I had reached my limit. I had no elite background and no obvious predisposition for high performance.

But over time, with the right structure and a bit of patience, things started to change.

Road marathons followed. Then 50km ultras. A first 100km. Mountain races in Snowdonia. Multi-stage events. Eventually, TDS during UTMB week.

Nothing changed overnight.

It was built.

The default advice in running is almost always to do more. More volume, more intensity, more races. And for a lot of people, that just leads to being constantly tired and wondering why they're not improving.

This is different.

The work is built around durability. Strength makes you more resilient. Endurance builds the engine. And consistency, over a long enough period, compounds into something you couldn't have imagined at the start.

There is no rush to peak quickly, and being constantly tired is not a badge of honour. Specific, well-designed training will always beat just doing more for the sake of it.

The goal is not to extract everything from you in the shortest possible time.

It is to build something that actually lasts.

This is long-term work.

Coaching is a lot more than just a plan to follow.

It is a structured working relationship built around you, your goals, your life, your capacity.

  • Bespoke endurance programming built around goals and life commitments
  • Integrated strength training for durability
  • Regular review and intelligent adjustments
  • Open communication and accountability
  • Race planning and preparation
  • Mindset development and resilience

Progress is rarely loud.

3 Years coaching runners
30+ Athletes coached
5 Years in strength & PT
2 Coaching qualifications

I'm a UESCA qualified endurance coach and CrossFit certified trainer. Before focusing on running, I've spent five years coaching strength and personal training, and that foundation is still at the core of how I work. I don't think of it as running coaching with some strength bolted on. It's all one thing.

Over three years I've worked with 30+ athletes at every level of experience, from people doing their first half marathon, seasoned runners taking on 50-milers for the first time, and everything in between, including multi-stage ultras and Back Yard events. The range matters. It means I understand that what works for one person genuinely won't work for another.

I've also done the racing. Roads: London twice, Valencia, Barcelona... Trails: 50kms, 50 miles, 100kms, a 250km multi-stage, and the TDS at UTMB week. I mention this not to impress, but because the experience is useful. I know what it costs to train through a full life, what it feels like to wake up at 4am for an early start, and how it feels to run on tired legs. I've been through it too and it shapes how I coach.

The thing I care most about is giving you the complete picture: the running, the strength work, the mental side, so that when it gets hard, you're ready for the challenge.

Runners who are ready to commit to something properly.

If you are willing to trust a process and stick with it, even when progress feels slower than you'd like, this is for you.

For people who want to build something they're genuinely proud of, rather than just chase the next shiny thing.

You are not the athlete you see online. You are an individual with your own constraints and capacity.

Anyone looking for a shortcut.

If you're the type to jump between programmes every few weeks looking for the perfect plan, we're probably not the right fit. The work here is simple, but it takes commitment.

Long-term performance requires alignment.

Athlete Experiences

Danni Danni 250km Multi-stage Ultra Marathon

"I've worked with Dan for almost 2 years, both with a big end goal. Before having Dan as a coach I'd only ever ran a marathon distance but he got me running a 50km and then a 250km. I got injured in my event the first year I had Dan and he coached me back to full fitness and strength the following year where I went back and completed my 250km multistage event. Dan also offered so much flexibility when life got in the way of training and collectively we managed to find a routine that worked for that stage in my life."

Jemma Jemma Road Marathon

"Working with Dan to prepare for my first marathon was truly a life-changing experience. From the very first day, Dan believed in me more than I believed in myself. He took the time to understand my goals, listened to how training needed to fit in with family, work and life commitments and created a personal plan that would fit in and still push me. What stood out most wasn't just his expertise, but his empathy. He celebrates every small win along the way, checks in when my motivation dips, and somehow always knows the right words to say to get me back on track. Finishing the marathon was one of my proudest moments ever."

Josh Josh 50km Ultra Marathon

"I reached out to Dan when I signed up for an ultra marathon and needed more structured focus to my training. Dan was super supportive across all sessions with feedback. All training was built around my preferences, focusing on weaknesses and endurance. I loved the structure of training and seeing the progress while working towards the goals we set out. Dan has always been supportive with identifying the positives to keep driving results, positive, supportive, and taught me resilience."

Sharon Sharon Road Marathon

"My experience working with Dan has been really positive mainly because he keeps everything so easy and chilled. There's no complicated workouts or conversations. Everything is easy, straight forward and calming. He has a way of holding me accountable to my training and getting the sessions done without me feeling like I'm under any pressure to do so. He clearly has so much knowledge and so much passion for helping people and enabling them to tap into their potential in a way that works best for them and with their lives."

Sarah Sarah Road Marathon

"If you're looking for a coach who can truly tailor your plan, then look no further. It's been so refreshing working with a coach that really listens to your personal goals, plans training around your life, supports you when you need someone to listen but then pushes you to reach your potential. Working with Dan I increased my pace, got stronger and managed to race my first road marathon in years. With Dan's support I safely trained through injury, becoming injury free. Dan is exceptional and I'd highly recommend him."

Claire Claire 10 in 10 Multi-stage Ultra Marathon

"Dan strikes a great balance between encouragement and understanding. Over the past year, as I've worked through an injury, he's adapted training thoughtfully and kept me progressing with confidence. He helps me push beyond what I thought I could do, while recognising my strengths and fitting sessions around real life to keep it all sustainable and enjoyable."

James James 100km Ultra Marathon

"Before starting with Dan, my running limit was not even 10km. In just one year, he transformed that into six ultra marathons and even a race win. His programme isn't just about running, it's a more rounded approach. He helped work on mentality and crucially strength work to avoid injuries. More than just a fantastic PT, he's become a genuine mate and a truly great guy. If you want to push your limits, he's your coach."

Charlie Charlie 50km Ultra Marathon

"Working with Dan has been a truly transformative experience. His holistic approach goes far beyond just running plans, he takes the time to understand and coach you as a whole person. Having picked up an injury in the lead up to my event, Dan truly understood the emotional and physical toll. He made it a 'we' problem, and always made it apparent that we were in the whole journey together. Honestly, having Dan as a coach felt like having a personal cheerleader who was always genuinely invested in my own personal journey and success."

Evie Evie 250km Multi-stage Ultra Marathon

"Dan was a great coach, he didn't just build me physically but he really helped me to mentally prepare in terms of building confidence and preparing me for what to expect. He is such a friendly and approachable person which I think is incredibly important when training for something which is likely to make you feel vulnerable and scared. He was very knowledgeable and didn't make the programme too overwhelming."

Emma Emma 250km Multi-stage Ultra Marathon

"Let's just start by saying I was extremely scared with the idea of having a coach but there was definitely no need to be, from the first call I had with Dan he put me at ease and explained that we will be working together as a team to get me as prepared for the big old goal as we could. Dan's ability to understand where you're at with no judgment, adapt your training around life/injuries and give you the confidence to push yourself to achieve what you didn't think was possible is so special! It was so nice to get started and have structure to each and every training session and know when to push and when to take days easier. Not only did Dan make sure I was ready to take on the challenges I had set throughout the year physically, he also made sure I was mentally prepared and with ways to overcome self doubt when it inevitably crept in. Having a coach who cares about the little things, is in your corner every step of the way and shouts from the rooftops about how proud they are of each milestone whilst reminding you to stop and reflect how far you have come is second to none from Dan & all of the Why We Run team."

Apply to Work Together

Coaching is selective to ensure it is the right fit on both sides.

The first step is a conversation to understand training history, goals and where uncertainty currently sits.

If the alignment is right, the work begins with clarity and commitment.

If this feels aligned, apply.
If not, I'll be here when you're ready.
